Cervicograpy refers to a process in which a 35 mm photograph is taken of the cervix after the cervix has been washed with a 5 per cent solution of acetic acid. HPV DNA testing is performed by a variety of techniques. The purpose of the testing is to identify tissue that contains HPV types that lead to cervical cancer. Over 99.7 per cent of all invasive cancers contain specific types of HPV DNA.

  53. Treatment options: Cone biopsy of the cervix involves cold knife excision of the entire transformation zone (area of the cervix where there is juxtaposition of two histologic types of tissue; the area of the cervix most likely to have precancerous lesions). Laser ablation utilises laser energy to vaporize the pre-cancerous tissue. Cryotherapy involves the local application of carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide to cause cellular death. LEEP or LLETZ involves removal of the transformation zone through use of an electrically-charged wire loop.
